This course aims at providing a comprehensive overview, from both theory and application perspectives, of the proven evidence and emerging opportunities of eco-innovation and circular economy in the urban context to address the key issues and challenges in sustainable urban development.

Rapid urbanization and external risks including climate change creating new risks and challenges in the area of sustainable urban development and management. Urban resilience is a versatile concept, which helps frames the difficult process of tackling the environmental, social, and economic challenges of modern cities in a positive way. However, similar to other broad concepts such as sustainability, resilience is inherently vague. This course is designed to prepare people for careers and leadership roles in resilience assessment in an urban context. It is designed to provide students with the multidisciplinary knowledge and skills required to understand successful approaches, tools and practices for the assessment of urban resilience. The course also covers specific topics to support the integration of resilience into sustainable urban development and management, particularly multiple-scale and multi-sectoral resilience assessment methods and capacity building.


The objective of this course is to provide scientific knowledge to comprehend and evaluate the complexity of urban air quality issues in Asian region so that they can formulate sustainable solutions applicable to manage air quality in different countries.

This course aims to provide a broad-based understanding of various cutting-edge knowledge in urban sustainability, innovations and connected technology. It focuses on urban scales and seeks to address the role of complex innovation and technologies for sustainability.


Course Objectives:    The objective of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills, in an interdisciplinary teamwork, on urban sustainability and innovation within the context of sustainable development. Competencies required to synthesize the acquired knowledge, using innovative approaches such as Logical Framework Analysis and supporting methods, are intended to be given through workshops and field studies of real world cases focusing on selected themes like modes of governance, environmental sustainability, technology innovation, etc. The course also covers the sustainability planning and design, community/site based innovation and communication (incl. technology, finance, products, process, etc.) which is very important aspect these days to lead the inclusiveness of the citizens in the city development and management. Further, this course provides the foundation required for students with skills of collecting, analyzing and interpreting data so as to generate solutions for urban development challenges and opportunities.
