Course Objective: In the current discourse on necessary transformative changes in energy systems, the objective of this course is to present details on key energy technologies and their development. The significant challenges, including resource availability, accessibility, security, and their impact on society, economy, geopolitics, jobs, and the environment, will also be presented. The role of energy in sustainable development and the SDGs framework as an operational tool will be explained.

 

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:

  • Explain the renewable energy (solar, biomass, wind, hydro, and geothermal) resource availability, conversion (technologies), and applications, as well as fossil fuel (coal, oil, and natural gas) origin, extraction, conversion, and the status of their utilization.
  • Apply the targets of SDG 7 to analyze the current status of technology, policies, and measures adopted to meet the energy challenges of energy access, renewable energy adoption, and energy efficiency improvements by 2030.
  • Analyze the urgency and enabling conditions for transition in the context of the Paris goal and connected challenges, and explain the multidimensionality of energy transition.
  •  Apply methods to calculate the total economic value in project design with examples from various countries.
